Those Who Are Blind

Verse: 2 Corinthians 4:4

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Thoughts
At first this verse sounds pretty discouraging. Rather than viewing it was discouraging though, I think we can view it as a reality check. This is just true. The god of this age is working to blind the minds of unbelievers. He is trying to keep people from faith, from fellowship, from worship, and from purpose. He is telling people they don't need God. I think we see this in our culture just as much as Paul saw it in his.

What I think is encouraging though, is that the light of the gospel can break through any blindness imposed by the god of this age. And this is why we share our faith. This is why we talk about Jesus, pray for our neighbors, and invite people to church. This is why we aren't ashamed of the gospel, but instead share it freely with those around us. Because while they may currently be blinded, that doesn't mean their heart isn't longing for more. It doesn't mean they don't sense that something is missing in life. It doesn't mean they don't long to be loved, accepted, and welcomed by God and others.

So as Paul says in verse 1, "we do not lose heart." It can be tempting to look around our society and despair. But that is forgetting the power of the gospel and Jesus. Remember, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17) Jesus is seeking the very people whom the god of this age is attempting to keep blind. And his tool, his megaphone, is the church. Let's remain people of hope and take this message of light into every corner of our lives. We never know who is just waiting to have their eyes opened.
