Verse: Acts 2:1-4
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Thoughts
We are going to spend a few weeks reading through Acts together. I can't cover every verse in this, but you can read along. So today, for example, I'm in chapter 2 - so you can pull up your Bible app and read the whole chapter. Each day I'll basically pull one verse or short passage from each chapter.
OK, so today I have a question for you. What role does the power of the Holy Spirit play in our lives? Clearly at the beginning of the church the Holy Spirit played a huge part, right? Not just in these passages, but all through the book of Acts we see prophecy, healing and miracles. What role does the Spirit play in your faith today?
I want to tell you that the same Spirit that was operating in these passages is dwelling in you if you are a believer in Jesus. Your faith is supposed to be more than just believing in God. It is more than just following a moral standard. It certainly isn't less than those, but it is more. Your faith is meant to be empowered faith.
What does that mean? I think it means a lot of things! For example, your prayers are empowered. You can (and should) be praying for God to do powerful works in your life and the lives of those around you. We should be praying for breakthrough, for healing, for insight, for God to lead us, for God to speak to us, and more! Also, the Spirit is meant to lead you and guide you. You aren't alone in this journey of following Jesus. The Spirit is your guide into all truth. He leads you and speaks to you. He encourages you and convicts you. Also the power of the Spirit changes you! By God's Spirit you can become the person he is calling you to be!
Take today's passage as a huge encouragement. You are not alone. God's Spirit is with you and he is offering you an empowered faith. More than a faith of just believing. He wants to empower you for his kingdom!
Prayer
God I pray that you would fill me with your Spirit today, and every day. I pray that you would make me sensitive to what you are doing in and through me.
