Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
There is a self-help industry in our culture that sells millions and millions of dollars worth of advice on how to better ourselves. And I have nothing against that per se. Except of course - they normally leave out God.
The Bible teaches us that it's not about making ourselves better, it's about letting God make us more like him. The beauty of this message is that it takes so much pressure off of you!
Jesus will do the work of sanctification in your life, if you let him. Sanctification is a fancy word that basically means to be set apart and free from sin. This is a work that God will do in your life if you let him. "The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it."
So instead of the pressure being on you to live a perfect life by reading more and more self help books, Jesus invites us to read the God-help book (too cheesy? sorry!) and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our hearts and lives and bring about real and lasting change.
Jesus I want to be more like you - please work in my life to strengthen me and teach me to walk in your ways!
