Run! Don't Walk!

Verse: Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

Devotion
I love the word picture that the author creates here. The name of the Lord is like a fortified tower. Of course we don't have fortified towers anymore, but the idea (as I'm sure you are aware) is that it was a place you could run for safety. If your city was under attack, or someone was pursuing you personally, you could run to this tower. It was fortified, safe, strong, protected, and available.

That is who God is for those who believe. He is like a modern day safe room, or tornado shelter. We can run to him and be safe. He is your peace in the storm, your wisdom in the confusion, your direction when you are lost, your strength when you are weary, your conviction when you are afraid, your power when you are doubting, and your love when you are hurting.

This is the offer to you and to me: He invites us to run to him (RUN DON'T WALK!) and find our safety IN HIM, not in our own strength. This is echoed by Jesus himself when he says:

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Please hear this today. Your safety, your refuge, your help, and your hope are found in Jesus alone. Will you run to him today? Will you let him hold you and carry you today? Will you let his strong arms surround you?

Prayer
I draw near to you God. I need your protection and your love to surround me today. I bring my fear and my pain to you.
