Verse: Matthew 6:1-4
6 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Devotion:
These verses can feel like a tough reminder, but an important one. We’re reminded of the importance of sincerity and humility in our acts of service and giving. Jesus specifically addresses this, telling us to not practice our righteousness in front of others in order to be seen by them, but instead to do so in secret, knowing that our Heavenly Father sees and rewards us. He sees us and knows the deepest desires of our heart.
When we give to those in need or serve others, it is not for our own glory or recognition, but rather to honor and obey God. Our motives should be pure and selfless, coming from a heart that genuinely desires to help and bless others. It is easy to seek approval and praise from others for our good deeds, but true fulfillment comes from knowing that we are pleasing God and following His will.
Reflection:
Let us take these verses to heart and examine our own intentions when we give or serve. Are we doing it out of love and compassion, or are we seeking recognition and praise from others? Are we doing it out of a sense of obligation or fear of disappointing others?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to strive to be like Christ, who humbly served and sacrificed for others without seeking any recognition or reward. Remind me that You are a good, caring Father and see the sincerity of my heart my heart. Help me to be more and more like You each day. Show me how to recognize when I lose sight of having a servant’s heart, and to recenter my focus on You. We love You Lord, amen.
